I have been thinking a lot lately about the growing incivility of so many in positions of power, whether they are politicians or talk show hosts. I don’t intend for this blog to be “political” in tone, but I am concerned about how influential some voices are, particularly voices that might lead to violence.
It makes no difference which side of the political divide one is on, the kind of rhetoric one hears if tuned into any number of radio or television shows is disturbing, to say the least. And the number of blogs that now exist calling for violence against our president is even scarier.
I think this means that those of us who want a more peaceful life, individually and collectively, have work to do. It falls on our shoulders, willingly I hope, to send forth thoughts of kindness, acts of love and suggestions of hope where ever we are. Start with the clerk at the grocery today. As Mother Teresa suggested a long time ago, “be kind to everyone and begin with the person standing next to you.” I do believe that “our numbers” can counteract the negativity of the voices of destruction if we take on this challenge. Be kind where ever you are. Express love to all you encounter. Nurture the seed of hope where ever a situation calls for it. Together we can make a difference in the civility quotient.
