Whew!! I am struggling to learn some thing new. I have never been very high tech. In fact, my first five books were written in long hand and I hired a typist just as I had done for my dissertation in graduate school. At the urging of friends I decided to give the computer a go and amazed myself that I could type and think simultaneously.
When it came to the internet, I again was timid at first, but I did go forward and learned how to e-mail and explore the web for information.
Next came a need for a web site. Writers need one I was told. But how was I to do that? With the excellent help and attentiveness of a very good friend who is a professional in the field of web design and all things related, a site was created for me, a site that included a list of books, my speaking engagements, miscellaneous musings, etc.
And then came the need for a blog. As you can see, baby steps are what I took throughout this process. I love baby steps. They don’t scare me. It’s rather like working the program that is my life line to sanity: one small step, one day at a time. So for some time now I have been blogging and I love this process. I love even more that so many of you have “chimed” in, in response to what I have blogged about. But I need to be able to update it as needed without crying help all of the time. Not easy. So once again, I have called on my friend Hank and his amazing ability to teach is about to make me self-sufficient. That is, until the next new idea has been bandied around and perfected enough for old folks like me to dare to try it.
I’m finding this way to reach all of you, coupled with correcting and deleting and adding new information doable. The computer is an amazing tool. And frankly, I am amazed that I no longer feel incapable of attempting those things that used to baffle me completely. Just like we have learned in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous, we discover we can, with God’s (or a friend’s help), do those things that used to baffle us.
I want to close this blog with a suggestion. Whatever you think you can not do, try it any way. Seek help if you find it baffling. But try it. I sincerely believe that those ideas that call to us, whether related to a whole new direction in life or a new hobby or exploring a new friendship, etc., are being sent our way as invitations from God. I could be wrong but I am where I am today because I dared to believe this. What do you have to lose?

Hi Karen,
I am currently reading “Change your Mind and Your Life Will Follow.” Apparently, it was my times to read this book, because I noticed I actually needed to put it down between pages, to “swallow” some of your suggestions and think about how I might utilize them.
I was shocked to read about your background as you could have been describing exactly my two sisters’ and brother’s childhood and some general history. For that reason, some of your suggestions, i.e. unconditional love and stop judging certainly seem the right way to go, but I’m trying to figure out how to do it.
I’m currently raising older teen boys, who certainly need my direction, and for that matter, some insistance that certain tasks be done – related to school, work, and preparedness for these same things. If I give up control, then certainly I’ll have time to develop me, but what about my kids? How do I not judge, when older boys most certainly put themselves at risk?
As concerns unconditional love,.. when deciding not to judge and instead, replace it with an unconditional love statement in my mind. Can you give me an example?
I realize these must seem so basic and “yesterday” for you. I am, however, just beginning my struggle with some of these behaviors.
Thank you,
Laurie

LaurieHi Laurie,
Thanks so much for writing. I know it’s not always easy to do what I suggest, particularly when children are involved. We certainly can set “rules,” and insist that until certain tasks are completed, freedoms will be limited. I think to get a glimmering of unconditional love, savor some fond memories of them as youngsters, hold those images in your mind when you are struggling with them as teenagers. In fact, this exercise works exceedingly well with all people. And know that this is a process, not to be mastered over night, Maybe not ever mastered but the practice of the suggestions will make a huge difference in our own peace of mind. Good luck. By the way, there is a companion book for Change Your Mind called It’s Up To Me and it’s 90 days of morning and evening exercises for practicing the principles in Change Your Mind. Could be very helpful. It’s available on amazon.

Oh Karen
I am sure you are WAY ahead of me in the computer area! But, as I start my first internet Masters course THIS MONTH, I suspect I’ll get up to snuff soon. Wonderful things keep happening around me…Promises coming true. Just have to be open and willing.

TracieHi Tracie,
Don’t ever give up on yourself. We can learn whatever we put our willingness toward. Thanks for responding to my blog.
Peace,
